Dunkin' Donuts Center-Providence
War Memorial Relocation

The Rhode Island Convention Center Authority purchased the Dunkin' Donuts Center from the City of Providence for $28.5 million in December. The Authority has embarked on a $62 million renovation of the "Dunk" to transform the facility into a state-of-the-art arena. Major elements of the construction, including an expanded lobby and an enclosed pedestrian bridge between the Convention Center and the Dunkin' Donuts Center, will enable the two facilities to be marketed as one unit to attract larger meetings and conventions.

The War Memorial at the Dunkin' Donuts Center is situated in one of the areas scheduled to be renovated. To enable this construction, the relocation of the War Memorial from its current site is necessary. Preliminary plans proposed the cleaning, reconstruction and relocation of the War Memorial several feet from its current site. The Rhode Island Convention Center Authority appreciates the significance of this historical monument and is committed to ensuring that its appearance will be improved with restoration and relocation to a more prominent site.

In the process of soliciting advice from the veterans' community and civic leaders, it was suggested that the War Memorial be moved to a new, more prominent location. The City of Providence plans to redesign LaSalle Square, allowing for improved pedestrian walkways and traffic flow. This may result in a more prominent and central location for the War Memorial.

To explore the relocation and redesign of the memorial within LaSalle Square, we are exploring recommendations for the redesign and relocation of the War Memorial within LaSalle Square. The city's Department of Planning and Development plans to solicit ideas for the design and layout of the monument through a design competition. Updates will be posted to this site as plans progress.

The War Memorial will be placed in a bonded storage facility to protect the monument while construction takes place. In the meantime, we invite you to visit this virtual memorial and honor all those who have served our nation.
